MANDLENKOSI MAVENGERE Artist
“My artworks bring us into observations and conversations around the issues of migration in our contemporary economic society.”
Mavengere’s work of art is a study of the people that choose to migrate and the ambitions that drive them to do it. He portrays Individuals who leave their familiar homes and territories, searching for better fortunes in larger cities and foreign countries. Mavengere creates banknotes on which he paints the stories of migration. He has named the currency ‘Gondruala’ – which is a fictitious money used as a backdrop for his paintings. ‘Gondruala’, stands for the uncompromised environment of dwelling, so as to contradict our morden day societies and economy. He explores the forces of ambition that drive us to migrate towards our dreams and attainments.
